Botswana at 60: A Nation Worth Celebrating
Botswana declared independence on 30th September 1966, and in 2026, the nation marks 60 years of sovereignty. Six decades of self-governance, growth, democracy, and progress. Six decades of a people who chose to build something worthy of their land, their children, and their future.
For our learners at Glody Dube International School, this is not just a history lesson. It is their story. Learners from Baby Class all the way through to Standard 7 will come dressed in traditional Botswana attire, representing the beauty and diversity of the nation's cultural groups. Parents and guardians are warmly encouraged to dress traditionally as well and join in the celebration. The more colour, the better.
Cultural Artefact Display
Our learners will proudly present and explain traditional Botswana artefacts including hand-woven baskets, traditional cooking pots, cultural jewellery, and heritage items passed down through generations. This is an opportunity for children to connect with their elders, their families, and their roots in a meaningful and tangible way.
Traditional Performances
Music, song, and dance are at the heart of Botswana's cultural expression. Our learners will take to the stage to perform traditional songs and dances that have been passed down through generations, bringing the school grounds alive with rhythm, movement, and celebration. Expect colour, energy, and performances that will give you goosebumps.
Independence Day Commemorations
A dedicated segment of the day will honour Botswana's 60th Independence Anniversary. Learners will reflect on the journey of the nation, recite poems, share readings, and pay tribute to the founders and leaders who shaped the Botswana we know and love today. It is a moment of quiet pride in the middle of a joyful day.
Traditional Food and Flavours
No cultural celebration is complete without food. Expect a showcase of traditional Botswana cuisine that will delight the senses and spark conversation about the culinary heritage that has nourished generations of Batswana families.
